What is the PAV-6400VA priming-assisted vortex pump?

The PAV-6400VA is a priming-assisted centrifugal pump with a vortex impeller design, based on the Gorman-Rupp 6400 Series platform. The vortex design uses a recessed impeller that creates a swirling vortex inside the pump casing to draw fluids and suspended solids into the volute. This reduces direct contact between the impeller and the pumped material, which minimises wear and reduces the risk of clogging. The priming-assisted system enables the pump to evacuate air from the suction line and prime from dry conditions.

In a conventional centrifugal pump, the impeller makes direct contact with the liquid and any solids being pumped. In the vortex design, the impeller is recessed away from the flow path. It creates a powerful swirling vortex within the pump casing that draws fluids and suspended solids into the volute without the impeller directly contacting the pumped material. This results in an unobstructed flow path that minimises clogging, reduces impeller wear when handling abrasive or solids-laden liquids, and extends service intervals.

The 6400 Series vortex models deliver flows up to 495 m³/h (137 l/s), heads up to 42 m, and can pass solids up to 4″ (102 mm). The PAV-6400VA uses a diaphragm pump priming system to evacuate air from the pump casing and suction line to create a vacuum. For applications requiring faster and more reliable priming under harsh conditions, the optional TPAWS (Twin Port Air/Water Separation) system is available.

Two vortex impeller types are available, each suited to different applications. The straight-vane impeller is designed for more aggressive, abrasive liquids where maximum wear resistance is required. Yes. The PAV-6400VA is designed with dry-run capability. An oversized, oil-lubricated mechanical seal allows the pump to operate without liquid in the casing without sustaining damage. This is particularly relevant for applications with intermittent flow, such as sewage bypass, stormwater handling, HDD-bentonite applications and construction site dewatering where the pump may periodically run dry between pumping cycles.

The vortex design and priming-assisted capability make the PAV-6400VA suitable for applications involving solids-laden, abrasive, or stringy liquids where clogging resistance and reduced wear are important. Typical applications include sewage bypass operations, municipal wastewater handling, HDD-bentonite applications, construction site dewatering, industrial process water, and stormwater management. TPAWS stands for Twin Port Air Water Separator, a proprietary system invented and designed by Gorman-Rupp. A priming-assisted system relies on a valve system, allowing air to be removed from the suction line and at the same time preventing fluids from entering the priming pump. The TPAWS effectively seals the vacuum port once the pump is fully primed, and opens when a reprime is needed. Thanks to the large secondary port, the priming time is reduced by up to 30%. As an added benefit, contamination on the valve seats is virtually impossible. Should any contamination hinder the effective reprime, a quick rinse with fresh water through the built-in flush port gets you going again. TPAWS is the most reliable air-water separating system on the market.

Standard construction includes a ductile iron pump casing and an impeller made from a Gorman-Rupp proprietary Hard Iron 400 Brinell alloy.
